Make a compliant passport photo at home

Photo booths and pharmacies charge for a set of passport pictures that you can often take yourself with a phone. Many government services now accept digital uploads — the US visa application (DS-160), US passport renewal online, UK passport online applications, Indian e-visa and OCI portals, and many Schengen consulate booking systems. The hardest part is getting the exact size and head position right, and that is exactly what this tool handles.

Choose your document from the list, then zoom and drag your photo until the top of your head touches the upper dotted line and your chin touches the lower one. The tool exports a JPG at the precise pixel dimensions at 300 DPI, ready to upload or print.

Official sizes at a glance

United States passport and visa: 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), exported at 600×600 pixels. The head, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must be between 1 and 1⅜ inches — 50% to 69% of the photo height. India visa and OCI use the same 2×2 inch format.

Schengen visa and most EU passports: 35×45 mm, exported at 413×531 pixels. The face from chin to crown should measure 32–36 mm, about 70–80% of the height. UK passport: 35×45 mm with a head height of 29–34 mm. Canada passport: 50×70 mm with a chin-to-crown height of 31–36 mm. Rules change from time to time, so always check the official government page before you submit.

How to take a photo that passes

Stand about one metre in front of a plain white, off-white or light grey wall, facing a window so daylight falls evenly on your face. Ask someone else to take the picture at eye level, rather than taking a selfie — selfies distort facial proportions and are frequently rejected. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, both eyes open and looking straight at the camera.

Remove glasses (the US no longer allows them at all), hats and headphones; religious head coverings are usually permitted if your face is fully visible. Tie back hair that covers your eyebrows or the edges of your face. Avoid shadows behind you by stepping a little away from the wall, and don't use filters, beauty modes or portrait blur — authorities reject photos that have been edited.

Printing your photo

For a paper application, print the downloaded JPG at its actual size (100%, "do not scale") on glossy or matte photo paper. Alternatively, place several copies on a 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) canvas and order a standard print at a photo shop, which is often very cheap. Cut along the edges carefully with a ruler and craft knife.

What this tool does not do

It does not change your background, smooth skin, remove shadows or check biometric compliance automatically. Most passport authorities forbid that kind of editing, and automatic checks can give false confidence. The dotted head guide is a visual aid based on the official ranges; the final responsibility for meeting the requirements remains with the applicant. Your photo never leaves your device — a meaningful advantage for an identity document.

Where your photo is processed

Cropping, zooming and the final JPG export all happen in your browser. Your portrait is an identity document, so it is never uploaded, used to train software, or shared with photo services. The face guide is drawn on top of your photo and does not scan or analyse your face.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is nothing to delete on a server. Your file only exists in this browser tab's memory while you work. It is cleared as soon as you press the × next to the file, reload the page or close the tab. We do not use cookies, local storage or any other browser storage to keep your files. The only lasting copy is the one you download, which is saved to your own device.

How your files stay private

Most online converters upload your file to a server, process it there and send it back. all in tool works differently: the processing code is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device. Your file is read from your disk into memory, transformed, and handed back to you as a download. It is never sent over the network, so there is nothing for us — or anyone else — to store, read or leak.

You can confirm this yourself: once the page has loaded, you can disconnect from the internet and the tool keeps working. This also means speed depends on your device rather than your connection, which is usually much faster for large files.
