How to use MP4 to MP3 Converter

  1. 1Choose a video file.
  2. 2Pick the MP3 quality.
  3. 3Convert, preview the sound and download the MP3.

Step by step: turning a video into an MP3

Choose a video file — MP4, WebM or MOV from your phone, camera or computer. The video loads into a small player so you can check it is the right one. Pick a quality setting, click Convert to MP3, and wait for the progress bar to finish. You can then listen to the result in the built-in player before downloading it. The whole conversion happens on your own device, so even a large video never leaves your computer or phone.

Common uses

Extracting audio from video is useful for saving a song or speech from a clip, turning a recorded lecture or meeting into a podcast-style file you can listen to on the go, pulling a voice-over out of a project, or shrinking a video you only need to hear — an hour of video can be gigabytes, while the same hour as MP3 is under 150 MB.

Choosing the right quality

128 kbps is clear enough for speech: lectures, interviews, voice memos and podcasts. 192 kbps is a safe choice for most music. 320 kbps is the highest quality MP3 supports and is worth picking when the video contains music you want to keep long-term. Higher quality means a bigger file, but even 320 kbps is only about 2.4 MB per minute of stereo sound.

Quality tips and limitations

The MP3 can never sound better than the video's original soundtrack, so start from the highest-quality video you have. Videos with surround sound are mixed down to stereo. Which videos can be read depends on your browser: MP4 and WebM work almost everywhere, while some MOV and MKV files use codecs certain browsers cannot play — if a video is rejected, try Chrome or Firefox.

Very long videos use a lot of memory because the whole soundtrack is decoded at once; on phones, videos under an hour are most reliable. The picture is discarded, so this tool is not suitable if you need to keep any visuals. Titles, chapters and other details from the video are not copied into the MP3.

How your files stay private

Most online converters upload your file to a server, process it there and send it back. all in tool works differently: the processing code is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device. Your file is read from your disk into memory, transformed, and handed back to you as a download. It is never sent over the network, so there is nothing for us — or anyone else — to store, read or leak.

You can confirm this yourself: once the page has loaded, you can disconnect from the internet and the tool keeps working. This also means speed depends on your device rather than your connection, which is usually much faster for large files.
